Symmetry, Balance and Straightness Training

Every human has a dominant side. We are either right or left handed. Is it any surprise horses are also naturally asymmetrical? This can be referred to as natural crookedness or imbalance. For example, horses are left or right bent in the body, and will carry more weight on the front legs than on the hind. This uneven distrubution of weight over four legs will cause imbalance.

The horse, in his role as an athlete, faces numerous challenges that should be addressed so that he can successfully and safely apply himself when mounted. The load of a rider added to the natural imbalance of a horse, must be of primary concern to you as the steward of your partner at any level of sport. In an effort to carry a rider, the horse may be using his muscles improperly and will be putting those muscles and tendons under tremendous stress. Imbalance can present itself under saddle as unwillingness, anxiousness, bracing, pushing, leaning, bucking and cow kicking.

This clinic will focus on a series of gymnastic exercises for the horse to stretch, supple, strenghten and balance his body. In hand and lunging exercises will build your horse's core strength and top line as well as encourage softness and willingness. By building symmetrical straightness, strength and balance, your horse will carry himself correctly, comfortably and confidently through all gaits, transitions and collection. A proper European cavesson has many advantages over standard and rope halter lunging. This is a vital tool that you will use for the developement and training of your horse. The goal of this clinic is to pinpoint assymmetry in your horses and learn the tools to develop your horse correctly using the cavesson. The recommended cavesson to purchase for this clinic is the best I've found in design, comfort and feel. Heavy, Amercian style cavessons are not going to work well for the goals of bringing your horse along in a clear and comfortable manner. DP Saddlery makes the European style cavesson and they can be purchased through Log Cabin Tack in Hooksett, NH.

Foundational Connection
This is a 90 minute class for owners and their horses. The focus will be directed towards partnership, a concept that is often overlooked in spite of it being a foundational building block on which to build the skills that we strive to perfect in the saddle. Borrowing principles from modalities such as aikido, yoga, corework, and mindfulness, owners can begin to understand how to reach deeper into themselves and their horses.

We will approach groundwork exercises as a way to demistify such concepts as "being present" with your horse while transferring energy and learning "feel". Sharing an unspoken language of connection will carry both of you through natural horsemanship goals, from the ground to the saddle. Enriching that nonverbal language will support your horses mentally and will give you the confidence that often deserts us during those moments when things go sideways. This class will encourage softness and responsiveness in both horse and owner.
